I think the main message we’ve tried to promote internally at MyMatchWork.com is the importance of building relationships with our employees. Understanding not only their value to the organization, but also who they are and their life context, and making accommodations that add value to their lives, amplifies the value employees bring back to the organization.
We have made recognizing the individuality of our employees a core part of our workplace philosophy and culture. It all starts with recognizing that every employee is a human being with a unique life situation.
Speaking within the context of a start-up organization, every employee understands their role and contribution to the organization’s mission. We empower them to accomplish that goal to the best of their ability and knowledge. With working remotely, we began managing employees based on the outcome of their work rather than in terms of when the work is submitted and what hours of the day the employee is working. We encourage people to take the time they need and trust that when they need to fulfill their caregiving responsibilities, they will communicate that to us.
We’ve done a fair bit of investigation with our research partners at the University of Alberta, University of Waterloo and University of Sheffield around what is the most important thing employers can provide to employees who are caregivers. By far, the most common response was flexible work options. In addition, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, employers started to receive and examine data that demonstrated their employees were a lot more productive overall and happier when working remotely. MyMatchWork.com has implemented these accommodations and has seen many positive results.
We acknowledge that as a start-up organization, we may not have the same resources available to implement some of the changes employee caregivers require. However, we recognize that value is returned through more committed and productive employees who aren’t burnt out. That’s why we encourage all employers to take similar steps and really focus on their workplace culture.
