GSK
GSK has been Canada’s top employer for the past three years, and in 2022 GSK was designated as one of Canada’s Top Family-Friendly Employers. We have deep roots in supporting our employees to ensure they don’t have to choose between their job and caring for a critically ill loved one.
We are proud to have been one of the first companies in Canada to formally establish a compassionate care benefit. This has enabled us to be there for our employees in a meaningful way at a time when they may feel helpless, isolated and overwhelmed, and when work should be the last thing on their minds. The program allows for increased flexibility and support for employees during these difficult times. Our program was foundational and a catalyst for other companies and organizations to follow suit. Two years after we established our program, the Government of Canada established its own program (in 2004). Since then, other organizations have introduced their own programs.
GSK helps employees balance their personal and work lives through a number of in-house policies, including flexible work hours, additional paid personal and paid sick days, and an online Healthy Life program to encourage employees to prioritize their health and wellness. We also provide an Employee Assistance Program to support employees in any number of stressful circumstances.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, GSK made an important cultural shift to encourage and support our people to look at how and where they perform at their best through a program called Performance with Choice. In addition, GSK implemented a number of COVID-specific benefits to support our employees who either needed time off for their own health or to support the health of family members recovering from COVID.
Post-pandemic—and even prior to the pandemic—employees are looking to do more than just balance work and life. They want to integrate them so they are where they need to be for work or for life depending on the situation or priority. Implementing policies that bring this flexibility into reality is key to creating a collaborative and successful work environment. Employers should not look at these policies as an added cost, but rather in terms of the value they bring to employees: priceless.
